Commissioned by English Heritage, Leach Studio have completed the design of a sensitive yet innovative interpretation scheme at Dartmouth Castle, a complex series of defence structures, built up over 600 years.
In the Victorian Guard-house, a life size wooden automaton shows visitors the development of the site over time, and also acts as an orientation tool for the current experience. Not only fun for children to interact with, the charm of the automaton engages all visitors with the Castle’s history and encourages them to explore further.
A fascinating animated film tells the story of the river chain - a vital defence mechanism to stop warships entering the estuary. Projected on to the walls of the gun tower, the boom of the cannon and clanking of the chain create a truly evocative atmosphere.
A children’s trail encourages families to explore the site together, whilst a costume activity with replica helmets has proved popular with adults and children alike!
