Hever Castle: Astor’s Garden Legacy

Hever Castle asked Leach Studio to help them create a new exhibition in a potting shed, set within the beautiful gardens of this 13th Century castle, once home to Anne Boleyn.

The exhibition tells the story of multi-millionaire William Waldorf Astor who moved to England from America at the turn of the 21st Century. In just four years, inspired by his passion for the Tudors and love of Italian design, he turned marshland and rough meadow into the classical landscapes that still shape the gardens of Hever today.

Our design needed to be robust enough to withstand external conditions, but balance the elegance of the eclectic gardens with the craftsmanship and honesty of the gardeners who would have worked in the shed. Tactile graphics and interactive furniture were inspired by timber palettes, combining natural materials with direct print, routed iconography and stencilled copper.

Hands-on interactives are integrated into seating benches; visitors can browse replica copies of Country Life whilst children guide a figure of Anne Boleyn around the Castle’s famous maze.
