On the shores of Lake Windermere, this extensive working mill started in 1835 producing wooden bobbins vital to Lancashire’s spinning and weaving industries. English Heritage commissioned Leach Studio to interpret and design an exhibition in the coppice barn as an introduction to the tour of the mill.
The voices of the men and boys who worked here populate the exhibition. In order to appeal to a broad audience, the story of the sole girl recorded as a bobbin manufacturer was also told, as well as other girls and women who undertook packing and domestic duties.
Leach Studio designed a range of heavy duty and hard wearing furniture and a 3D topographic map of the area, specifying environmentally sustainable and locally grown timber. A 10-metre tactile timeline graphic features real timber products produced at Stott Park throughout its life. A hands-on family external trail uses simple yet effective interactive panels, on which children use a ‘bobbin key’ to reveal answers to pre-defined clues.
