Sumburgh Head Lighthouse

Shetland Amenity Trust appointed Leach to design and implement a new Visitor Centre, retail and exhibition space as part of a £4.5 million refurbishment of the Grade I listed ‘Stevenson’ Lighthouse.

Our content and conceptual designs for the project were intrinsic in supporting HLF funding applications, the creative direction conceptual ideas remaining consistent throughout a 6-year project programme and several value engineering processes.

A comprehensive interpretation strategy, Exhibition Development Plan and Educational Outcome Strategy weaved together seemingly disparate stories of iron age history, lighthouse development and a reconstructed World War II radar hut.

The Engine Room and Smithy were restored to their original glory and brought to life with social history stories through atmospheric audio and oral histories.

A large central lighthouse model illustrates foghorn compressor air flow and is capped by an invisible speaker which bellows out a foghorn sound to great effect!
